A Letter From a Reader: The Sapphire, the 60th and the Christening (Wendy)
One Dress For Pam's 60th And The Christening. No Slip, No Cardigan, No Wrap.
A note from a reader about the small New Zealand boutique dress that did a four hour vineyard lunch and a church in Rotorua a fortnight apart, and asked nothing of her at either.
Pam from book club turned sixty in October, and her daughters put on a long lunch at a vineyard out past Te Puna, four hours in the sun with speeches.
I am 64. A fortnight later my niece Hannah's little one was christened in Rotorua, and I had one dress for both, which is not how I have ever done occasions. I have always owned the dress I cannot wait to take off, with a slip under it, a cardigan over it and a wrap in the car in case the cardigan was wrong.
The dress is from a small New Zealand boutique called The Mount Coastal Boutique. It is called the Sapphire. I have written about it before, for two weddings, and I am writing again because the sixtieth and the christening were a different test. A four hour outdoor lunch in the heat, then a cold church and a hall full of people holding babies. One dress, no slip, no cardigan, no wrap.
What it is
A midi in a soft blue mosaic print, blues and greens with a little gold in it, so it reads as an occasion dress from across a room and as a pattern you could wear to the market up close. A V neck that sits where a V should sit. Short flutter sleeves that cover the top of the arm and move when you do. A softly shaped waist with no stiff band in it, and a hem that dips a little lower at the back, so it swings. One colour. Sizes S to 2XL.
But I want to be honest about the part that actually mattered to me.
It asks nothing of me, and it looks expensive.
That is the whole thing. I put it on in the bedroom, turned side on to the mirror the way I always brace myself to do, and did not reach for the slip, or the cardigan, or the wrap. I reached for my sandals.
On the way to the dinner the night before the lunch. The print does the talking, so I did not have to.
Four hours in the sun with speeches, and not once did I pull at the waist or look for a cardigan.
The lunch, then the church
The vineyard lunch was thirty degrees under the umbrellas and the speeches ran long, the way they do when the daughters have written them. The soft waist meant I could eat the lunch. The flutter sleeves meant my arms were covered in every photo and I was not hot. The hem meant I could walk the rows afterwards with Pam, who was in something with a stiff waistband and told me about it.
Two women at the table asked where the dress was from, and one of them was Pam's mother, who is 84 and does not ask about dresses.
The christening was the other end of the scale. A cold church in Rotorua, then a hall with tea and sausage rolls and babies passed from arm to arm. The same dress, with a cardigan in the car that I did not go back for, because the sleeves and the length were enough and the print did not mind a baby on my hip. Christine looked at me in the car park and said, you wore that to Pam's, and I said yes, and she said, well, it does not look like it.
"You wore that to Pam's," Christine said. "Well, it does not look like it."
→ Read about the SapphireWhat changed in three weeks
I had not been looking to feel pretty. By a certain age you quietly lower that bar to comfortable, and then again to covered. What surprised me about the Sapphire is that it gave me all three at two occasions that had nothing in common.
Three things I noticed, and I wrote them down because I knew I would want to remember.
1. The waist is soft. Shaped, so it reads as a figure, but there is no band to regret during the speeches. I ate the lunch and sat through the church without a thought.
2. The sleeves are the point. Short flutter sleeves that cover the top of the arm and move. I am in every photo from both days with my arms where they are, and I have not cropped one.
3. It looks like more than it cost. The print with the little gold in it is the kind that gets you asked at a vineyard and does not mind a hall in Rotorua. Nobody could tell it was the same dress, and nobody could tell what I paid.
It has the kind of easy shape that lets me walk vineyard rows, kneel at a font, and bend down for Bruce, our little rescue terrier cross, without the dress fighting me once.
Now, about the price
I want to talk about the price, because it was the thing that almost stopped me. The Sapphire for $99.95 is, frankly, suspicious. I sat at the kitchen bench and wrote down what I had paid, or seen, for an occasion dress like this in the last couple of years.
- Trelise Cooper occasion dress, $279
- Ricochet, $179
- The Mount Coastal Boutique Sapphire, $99.95
And underneath, in slightly larger letters, the only thing I could think to write. …how??
Mine came by NZ Post in nine working days, tracked, with a little handwritten card from Eleanor, who owns the boutique. When I was unsure between two sizes a woman called Susan answered that afternoon with the measurements, and I ordered early enough that it was hanging on the door a week before Pam's lunch.
What I'd tell you if we were friends
If we were on my back deck with a cuppa and you asked me whether you should order one for a date, this is what I would say.
I would tell you that women our age have spent years owning an occasion dress we cannot wait to take off, and that the Sapphire is the first one I have owned that I wore home. One colour, S to 2XL, same price in every size. The print does the work, so you do not have to.
I would tell you two honest things. Order it early, because NZ Post takes seven to ten working days and a date is a date. And buy a second one, so it is never in the wash on the day. If you buy two the stack discount comes off, and between a wedding, a sixtieth and a christening you will wear both.
If you have, for longer than you would like to admit, been standing in a bedroom the morning of an occasion with a slip, a cardigan and a wrap laid out on the bed, please do not wait.
While your size is still there.
